Higher Heights Statement on the Conviction of Former Officer Derek Chauvin 

NEW YORK — Today, Glynda C. Carr, the President and CEO of Higher Heights for America — the only national organization exclusively dedicated to harnessing Black women’s political power from the voting booth to elected office — issued the following statement on the conviction of former police officer Derek Chauvin. 

“George Floyd should still be alive today. While the legal system cannot give justice to those it brutalizes, I am relieved that a jury has found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of the killing we all plainly saw on the video. I hope Mr. Floyd’s family finds some peace in this decision, but we know the fight to end the over-policing of Black bodies does not stop here. With this conviction, we must work to ensure no more Black people senselessly lose their lives at the hands of the police.

“As advocates for equity and Black representation, Higher Heights is fighting to elect leaders that not only acknowledge the criminal legal system’s disproportionate harm on Black people but commit to taking active steps to transform the system from its racist origins. We remain dedicated to electing Black women into office at all levels to ensure that communities across America have the chance to experience transformation and end the unjust policing and murdering of Black people.”
